Places of Interest in Lanzarote

If you are looking to relax and enjoy the sun and the beaches then Lanzarote is for you.  If you want a break from relaxing, then take advantage of Lanzarote's many unique sights to see and places to visit.  You can reach these by hire car, or by excursion bus.  If you feel energetic, then the island has plenty to offer, here is just a small selection.....

National Park of Timanfaya is a volcanic landscape where visitors can appreciate a large variety of geological phenomena as well as a large biological mix of some 180 different plant species. Visitors can watch thermic anomalies such as water being introduced into a hole in the ground and it becoming a geiser of boiling steam in seconds. The restaurant El Diabo serves specialities of the island over geothermal heat.

Cesar Manrique Foundation - This cultural centre, open to the public, houses some of the works of this world famous artist and also exhibits a private collection of some prestigious artists such as Picasso, Miro and Chillida. The building was erected on five very large, natural volcanic bubbles and has an inhabitable surface area of 1800 square metres over two levels.

Jameos del Agua - An interesting gallery of connecting caves and underground grottoes. Visitors can enter into a roofless volcanic bubble through a winding staircase and from there into a magnificent garden with a large swimming pool. A dance floor and two bars are built into the niches formed by the rocks and an exciting night club. A concert cave seats 600 spectators and offers a unique setting for concerts and ballet performances.

The Museum of Contemporary Art
is located in Arrecife inside the San José Castle which is a fortress built in the 18th century. The San José Castle regularly hosts temporary exhibits, conferences, round tables etc.

Santa Bárbara Castle, now a museum, sits on the Guanapay mountain overlooking Teguise. It was built by Sancho de Herrera in the 16th century as a watchtower for the coastlines on both sides of the island.

El Grifo Wine Museum is located on the homonymous vineyards, on the road from the monument Al Campesino towards Uga, next to the village of Masdache. Wine tasting courses are available all year round so that visitors can fully appreciate the characeristic body, flavour and colour of the local wines.
